Ingredients

Dry ingredients
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp allspice
  • 0.25 salt
Wet ingredients
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Add-ins
  • 2 cup apples, peeled and finely diced
  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)
To finish
  • Caramel sauce for drizzling

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Preheat and prep the pan
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F, then grease a 9x13 baking pan so the brownies release cleanly after baking.
Whisk the dry ingredients
  1. Whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt until evenly combined with no visible streaks.
Mix the wet ingredients
  1. Whisk melted butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until smooth, then add eggs and vanilla extract and whisk until glossy and fully incorporated (about 30 seconds).
Combine and fold in fruit
  1. Fold the flour mixture into the wet mixture just until combined, then fold in diced apples and walnuts or pecans if using.
Bake
  1. Spread the batter into the prepared pan, then bake for 30-35 minutes at 350F until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
Cool and finish with caramel
  1. Cool the brownies in the pan, then drizzle caramel sauce across the top before cutting into squares.

Notes

For the most even apple pieces, dice the apples uniformly (about 1/4-inch) so every bite has fruit. Store airtight at room temperature up to 3 days or refrigerate up to 5 days; freeze up to 2 months for best texture. For a lighter option, use a reduced-sugar caramel sauce or omit the caramel drizzle.
